SAFETY PLAN

Thornydale Little League

 

POLICY:

The Thornydale Little League in accordance with Little League Baseball, Incorporated provide a plan that will assure the safety and dedication to injury prevention to the players, managers, coaches and other volunteers.

 

STANDARD:

1.                  It is the responsibility of everyone associated with the league to report any current or potential safety hazards to the league safety officer.

 

2.                  All volunteers that wish to participate with the league are required to complete the Little League Baseball mandated volunteer application form.  The Board of Directors are responsible for conducting back ground checks on all volunteers and shall approve all volunteers prior to their participation with the league.

 

3.                  First aid kits and ice packs are located in the concession stand at Arthur Pack Park.

 

4.                  No games or practices shall be conducted when weather or field conditions are not safe, particular when field lighting is inadequate.

 

5.                  It is the responsibility of the managers, coaches and safety officer to inspect the playing field area on a frequent basis for holes, damage, stones, glass and other foreign objects.

 

6.                  All team equipment will be stored within the team dugout, or behind screens, and not within the area defined by the umpires as in “play.”

 

7.                  Only league approved managers, coaches, umpires and players are permitted on the playing field or in the dugout during the games.

 

8.                  Team coaching personnel are responsible for keeping bats and loose equipment off the field of play.

 

9.                  During warm up drills, players should be spaced so that no is endangered by wild throws or missed catches.

 

10.              All pre-game warm ups shall be performed within the confines of the playing field and not within areas that frequented by, and thus endanger spectators (i.e. playing catch, pepper, swinging bats, etc.).

 

11.              It is the responsibility of the team coaching staff to inspect on a regular basis the condition of the team equipment (batting helmets, catcher protective equipment, bats).  Equipment that is cracked or damaged is to be removed immediately from the team bench and the team manager is responsible for contacting the league equipment manager to return the damaged and receive replacement equipment.

 

12.              Batters and runners MUST wear Little League approved protective helmets during batting and base running practice and during all games.

 

13.              Catchers MUST wear protective catcher helmet, mask, throat guard, long model chest protector, shin guards and protective cup supporter at all times (males) during all practices and games.  NO EXCEPTIONS.

 

14.              ALL male players from Class AA Division thru to Senior Division are required to wear protective cup and supporter for all practices and games.  It is the responsibility of the coaching staff to have each player acknowledge that they are wearing the required supporter equipment prior to every practice and game.  Failure for a player not wearing a cup supporter will result in the player not being permitted to practice or play in a game. 

 

15.              The catcher MUST wear catcher’s protective helmet and mask with throat guard while warming up a pitcher.  This regulation applies to between innings and in the bullpen area during a game and also during practices.

 

16.              Managers and coaches ARE NOT PERMITTED to warm up pitchers before or during a game.

 

17.              Except when the runner is returning to first base, head first slides are NOT permitted.

 

18.              During sliding practice, bases should not be tied down or anchored.

 

19.              It is the responsibility of the coaching staff to manager and immediately act upon any type of “horse play” that is encountered while on the playing field during practice or a game.

 

20.              Players that wear glasses, the team coaching staff has the responsibility of communicating with the parents to encourage that they obtain safety glasses.

 

21.              Coaching staff are to inquire and should have knowledge if a player is wearing contact lenses.

 

22.              Players are NOT permitted at any time during practice or a game to wear watches, rings, pins, necklaces, chains or any metallic items.

 

23.              On deck batters are NOT permitted in the lower baseball or softball divisions, with the exception of the Junior/Senior baseball and softball divisions.

 

24.              DO NOT ADMINISTER ANY MEDICATIONS.

 

25.              DO NOT LEAVE AN UNATTENDED CHILD AT A PRACTICE OR GAME.  It is the responsibility of the coaching staff to remain with the unattended child and attempt to contact the parent/guardian and remain with the child until an adult arrives and is recognizable by the childDO NOT let a child leave the field unless they fully recognize and acknowledge the adult that is picking them up.  It is the responsibility of the parents/guardian to communicate with the coaching staff if they are going to be late in picking up the child.

 

 

CONTACT LISTS:

1.                  Team managers are responsible for maintaining and having in their possession at all practices and games every player’s medical clearance form that is issued to them prior to the start of the first team practice by the League Player Agent.

 

2.                  The team manager is to have every player’s telephone contact number, this should include the cell numbers of parents/guardian.

 

3.                  Team manager is to have the contact number of the League Safety Officer for the ability of having immediate contact in the event of incident.

 

4.                  Players parents/guardian is to be issued a contact list of all team coaching personnel to include home, cell and business phone numbers.

 

REPORTING ACCIDENTS:

1.                  It is the responsibility of the team manager or in their absence the coach of record to contact the league safety officer to report an accident.

 

2.                  Upon receipt of an accident report, the League Safety Officer has the responsibility to contact the League President and Little League Baseball with documented details.

 

INSURANCE COVERAGE:

1.                  The league through Little League Baseball pays for on an annul basis accident and liability insurance.  This insurance is in effect from through the calendar year (December 31st) and covers all players, managers, coaches and all volunteers that provide a service to the league.

 

2.                  The league accident insurance DOES NOT COVER ANY INDIVIDUAL THAT RECEIVES COMPENSATION for providing services to the league.

 

3.                  The accident insurance is a “secondary” type of insurance and is to be used after a family health coverage has exceeded its limit.  When this occurs, families are responsible for contacting the league and provide them with copies of unpaid insurance bills that are then sent to Little League Baseball for payment.  Medical bills must be submitted during the coverage period.

 

4.                  The accident insurance can be used a “primary” coverage for those families that do not have any type health care.

 

 

 

WHAT TO DO UNTIL EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE ARRIVES:

 

1.                  EMERGENCY MEDICAL HELP.  Stay with the victim while someone else calls 911 for emergency response.

 

2.                  BREATHING: Observe breathing and if necessary and IF knowledgeable begin CPR.

 

3.                  CIRCULATION: Check pulse periodically.  If no pulse and IF knowledgeable begin CPR.

 

4.                  BLEEDING: Apply direct pressure and elevate to stop persistent bleeding.

 

5.                NECK OR SPINAL INJURIES:  DO NOT MOVE VICTIM.

 

6.                  OTHER HEALTH ISSUES:  Have a member of the coaching staff immediately pull the player’s medical information form to check for any medical or medication information.  Contact the parents/guardian if they are not present at the practice or games.

 

7.                  STAY CALM:  Reassure the victim and stay calm.

 

 

 

FIRST AID CERTIFICATION:

 

1.         It is very important at the first team meeting to advise parents/guardian the status of the team coaching personnel as it relates to first aid/CPR certification.

 

 

TRAINING:

 

1.                  Every team manager on an annual basis MUST attend either a league or District 5 mandated safety and first aid training program before they are permitted by the league to conduct the first team practice.

 

2.                  Documentation that individuals attended and participated in the mandated safety training program shall be maintained by the league safety officer.
